A FREIGHT train has derailed in Canada, knocking down power pylons in its wake and leaving thousands without electricity.
Shocking images show the train’s tanks and carriages crumpled into a heap after the horror crash with debris strewn across the road.
Fire crews and police squads rushed to the scene in Repentigny, a suburb in the north of Montreal, as terrifying images appeared on social media.
In one clip, a passerby records a derailed tank car that had stopped just metres from a transmission tower and a local’s garden.
Chunks of pavement and fences perilously close to residents’ houses were ripped up in the dramatic smash.
Several trees and power lines were also crushed, sparking an area-wide blackout.
Another video shows horrified onlookers at the scene of the crash, where destroyed tankers and debris spill onto the street.
The wreckage has completely obstructed a road through the town.
The City of Repentigny wrote on Facebook: “A railway incident has occurred at the intersection of De la Paix and J.-A.-Paré streets.
“Our emergency teams (firefighters and police) are currently responding on site.”
Repentigny mayor Nicolas Dufour said in a statement: “At this time, we have no information to indicate any injuries.
“We also do not have information suggesting that the train was carrying dangerous goods.
“However rest assured that everything will be put in place to secure the sector.”
According to Hydro-Québec, 2,674 customers are without power.
It comes just weeks after a driver was killed when one train rammed into another in Bedford, England.
Several commuters were left bloodied, bruised and with broken bones after the horror smash.
Nearly 90 people were injured with authorities reporting 33 very serious or serious injuries and 56 minor injuries.
Horrified passengers said they had no warning of the crash and that the terrifying shunt, which mangled carriages and ripped up seats, felt “like a bomb had gone off”.
The person killed in the crash was the driver of one of the trains, the general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) said in a statement.
Both trains were headed for London with the first, a 3.50pm service from Nottingham to St Pancras, stopping with a safety fault.
It was running 18 minutes late when the 4.40pm Corby train, which had stopped at Bedford station two minutes earlier, slammed into the back of it.
It is unclear how fast the train was going at the time but the driver is said to have applied the emergency brake.
