‘Classic’ Western movie with ‘excellent’ Elvis performance streaming for free

The film starring Elvis Presley in a titular role is now free to stream for fans of ‘The King’.

Enthusiasts of Western films and musicals are being encouraged to revisit this overlooked treasure now available to stream without charge.

The film also features the ‘King’ of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley, who is broadly regarded as one of the most iconic vocalists in history.

Helmed by Frederick De Cordova, the 1966 picture sees Elvis perform alongside actress and singer Donna Douglas, recognised for her portrayal of Elly May Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies.

Whilst the film holds just 49% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, numerous fans have described it as a “classic” hidden gem and perhaps even a “guilty pleasure” viewing experience.

Frankie and Johnny is an uplifting musical western ideal for cinema enthusiasts seeking genuine nostalgia, and it’s now available to stream free on Pluto TV, reports the Express.

The film’s synopsis states: “Habitual gambler and musician Johnny performs at a riverboat casino on the Mississippi River, along with his girlfriend, Frankie.

“A rash of bad luck leads Johnny to a fortuneteller, who informs him of a redheaded good luck charm. Enter Nellie Bly, the lover of Johnny’s boss, whose presence coincides with a change in Johnny’s luck.

“But Frankie grows jealous of Johnny’s new acquaintance, and the conflict comes to a head during a masquerade ball.”

Viewers flocked to the comments section on Rotten Tomatoes to express their opinions on the overlooked picture, with one declaring: “I thought it was a Classic, especially because Elvis is my favorite! 🙂 Not only is he a great singer/dancer but he is a great actor!

“Awesome! ! ! ! ! Elvis is the best!” a second wrote, as another agreed: “Lots of action in that one. Very good.”

“Excellent Elvis movie,” a fourth wrote, while another enthused: “GREAT MOVIE AND IT IS SO COOL!!!”

One more viewer advised: “Recommend this one… In terms of looking into the life of a gambler… Plus Elvis Presley was great in this movie.”

Meanwhile, other fans were less enthusiastic about the film, with one writing: “I enjoyed the cast in this one as Donna & Elvis worked well together but, the story could have been better.”

“Not a great movie but it is tolerable,” another shared, as a third concurred: “Fairly weak. There are much better Elvis movies.”

However, other viewers suggested the film made for an enjoyable guilty pleasure watch, with one confessing: “Ok. This is an awful film. I admit it. But it is a guilty pleasure that always makes me smile.”
