How Afronitaaa and 7-Year-Old Deaf Dancer Abigail Won Hearts on Britain’s Got Talent
Ghanaian dance duo Afronitaaa and Abigail Dromo captured the hearts of millions after earning a place in the Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals with an unforgettable performance celebrating Ghanaian culture, resilience, and friendship.
The pair were officially announced as semi-finalists after their audition quickly became one of the most talked-about performances of the season.
A Life-Changing Audition
When they stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage, Afronitaaa introduced herself with one clear mission.
“We want to make Simon Cowell smile with our performance,” she said before the music began.
Known as one of the toughest judges to impress, Simon Cowell watched as Afronitaaa and seven-year-old Abigail delivered an energetic dance routine inspired by Ghanaian choreography, set to Afrobeats music by UK-Ghanaian artist Fuse ODG.
“We’re bringing Ghanaian energy to light up the auditorium,” Afronitaaa said before taking the stage.
She added that they were there to “make history” and represent Ghana on one of the world’s biggest talent platforms.
As the performance unfolded, the audience erupted with cheers. Many spectators were visibly emotional, with some wiping away tears as the dancers performed with incredible precision and joy.
The judges were equally moved.
All four judges rose to their feet with a standing ovation.
Amanda Holden described the performance as “absolutely, insanely good.”
“So joyful, so brilliant,” she said, calling the pair “two of the most fantastic dancers we’ve ever seen on Britain’s Got Talent.”
Bruno Tonioli praised their choreography as “world-class,” calling the duo “dancing queens.”
Simon Cowell was especially touched by their story.
After learning that Afronitaaa had chosen to mentor Abigail, Simon called it “a wonderful thing.”
“If this video gets out there,” he told them, “I believe your life is going to change for the better.”
He later described their routine as one of his favorite auditions of the entire season.
Who Is Afronitaaa?
Afronitaaa, whose real name is Danita Yeboah, is one of Ghana’s best-known dancers and choreographers.
She began dancing professionally at just 14 years old and joined DWP Academy in 2018 before leaving in 2024 to launch her own dance academy for children.
Alongside her dance career, the 20-year-old studies Business Administration at the University of Ghana.
Over the past six years, she has built an audience of more than six million followers across social media and has collaborated with artists and brands from Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Barbados, France, Dubai, and the United Kingdom.
Afronitaaa specializes in Afropop dance, blending traditional African movement with modern dance styles.
Meet Abigail Dromo
Abigail Dromo is a seven-year-old dancer born deaf.
Despite being unable to hear or speak, she became a national sensation after winning TV3 Talented Kids Ghana in 2023.
Her mother, Evelyn, recalled that Abigail never cried when she was born, even after nurses tried to stimulate a response.
The family only realized something was wrong after Abigail turned one year old.
“She didn’t respond to sounds. She couldn’t say ‘Mommy’ or ‘Daddy,’ and she would sleep through loud noises,” Evelyn explained.
Doctors later confirmed that Abigail had profound hearing loss.
More recently, she received a hearing aid that allows her to hear limited sounds in one ear.
A Mentor Who Changed Everything
Afronitaaa first discovered Abigail through videos shared on social media.
“As soon as I watched her dance, I felt I was meant to mentor this little girl,” she said.
The two soon became dance partners.
Teaching Abigail required creativity.
Because Abigail does not use sign language, Afronitaaa communicates through body movements, gestures, and physical demonstrations.
Abigail also follows rhythm by feeling vibrations through her feet and chest, while her hearing aid helps her detect some sounds.
According to Afronitaaa, Abigail had always dreamed of performing on a major international stage.
She regularly watched Britain’s Got Talent audition videos on her iPad and hoped one day she would stand on that stage herself.
“I wanted to make that dream come true,” Afronitaaa said.
She also hopes their journey sends an important message to children everywhere:
“Disability is not inability. If you have talent, never hide it.”
Through her children’s dance academy, Afronitaaa says she wants to inspire and develop the next generation of dancers—one child at a time.
