A BBC Breakfast star has made an admission while discussing the 2026 Oscars.

The brightest Hollywood stars descended on the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the 98th Academy Awards at the weekend. During the ceremony, political thriller One Battle After Another was crowned Best Picture, while Hamnet star Jessie Buckley completed her clean sweep as Best Actress.

Elsewhere, Michael B Jordan was named Best Actor for his dual role as twins in Sinners. This comes after Marty Supreme star Timothée Chalamet drew criticism from the arts community in recent weeks for saying “no one cares” about ballet and opera during a televised conversation with Matthew McConaughey.

During the latest instalment of BBC Breakfast, media and arts correspondent David Sillito set the record straight on Timothée’s chances of winning an Oscar, after many claimed he had been “snubbed” at the ceremony because of his comments.

“Talking about difficult moments, of course, an awful lot of eyes were on the person who was the frontrunner in [the Best Actor category],” David explained to hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay.

“From the very beginning, everyone thought it was going to be Timothée Chalamet’s night. But somehow, his Oscar campaign sort of petered out, and the one thing all the jokes were about [were] those comments about ballet and opera.”

Oscars host Conan O’Brien made reference to Timothée’s comments during his opening monologue, quipping: “Security is extremely tight tonight. I’m told there’s concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities.”

The camera then panned to an amused Timothée and his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, with Conan adding: “They’re just mad you left out jazz!”

Speaking about the joke, BBC reporter David noted: “[That] might have been a bit difficult for [Timothée] to deal with.”

Sally then asked: “Do you think it actually did damage his chances?”

David replied: “It came, I think, a bit too late. I think most of the voting had already happened by that time, but certainly it’s probably what he’s going to be more remembered for than his extraordinary performance in Marty Supreme.

“I think he spent seven years learning to play table tennis, and he’s remembered for one bad comment about ballet and opera.”

Elsewhere on the big night, Sean Penn, who wasn’t at the ceremony, won Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, setting a record with his win. Paul Thomas Anderson’s thriller also landed wins for Best Directing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Casting.

Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Weapons, while KPop Demon Hunters won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The film’s hit track, Golden, also became the first K-pop song to ever win an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
